Summer School to debate key issues on screening for Sads

Forum ICGP

Saturday 1 June 2013

The major issues surrounding screening for cardiac risk will form the basis of a key debate at the ICGP Summer School in Kilkenny this month.

Dr Deirdre Ward, consultant cadiologist and director at the Centre for Cardiac Risk in Younger Persons at Tallaght Hospital, and Dr. Joe Galvin, consultant cardiologist at the Mater Hospital, will speak for and against the benefits and risks assocated with screening.

Issues will include the background to sudden cardiac death (SCD), conditions that may cause it and how to recognise them. Evidence for and against general population screening and the available options for those seeking screening will also be debated.

Dr Ward will focus on the need to offer a comprehensive screening service to all first degree relatives of sudden adult death syndrome (SADS) victims as a priority. Worldwide data agrees that in 30-40% of cases the cause is a hereditary condition and immediate relatives may have a 50% risk of being affected by the same condition, she told Forum.

Dr Ward will stress the need for dedicated centres of expertise to improve the diagnostic yield but also to provide the necessary management plan, follow-up care, supply information to patients and families and, provide psychological support.

Dr Joe Galvin will focus on the importance of screening of families affected by SADS or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and the risks and benefits of general population screening for inherited cardiac diseases.

As regards screening the entire population for these conditions, or at least  young people engaged in sport. Dr Ward will point to Italian data on mandatory pre-participation screening of young people in competitive sports. This data, often dismissed as exaggerating the potential benefits of such a programme, is in fact the most robust body of evidence, collected over 30 years, and demonstrates a potential 90% reduction in SCD, she said.

The debate takes place on Friday, June 21 at 2.30pm in the ICGP Summer School in the Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny

 "Conquer Corran Tuathail" -  Countdown

With less than 3 weeks to go to the Fixtures Section Fundraiser "Conquer Corran Tuathail"  everyone in the group will now be getting a little twitchy as they contemplate the challenge ahead on June 1st as they prepare for the ascent of the highest mountain in Ireland. The brave group of Club members who have decided to take up challenge is as follows:

Darragh O Toole
Robbie Naughton
Aaron McGrane
Eoin Connaughton
Stewart Galligan
Pauline Devlin
Carol Devoy
Clare Reaney Donohoe
Rory Madigan
Jay Keeley
Collie Flynn
Gary O Connell
Henry Dempsey
Shane Casey
Mick O Donovan
Ann O Donovan
Enda Farrell
Mel Farrell

There are also a few non members who will also join the main group and will also be raising funds for the Fixtures section

If you have already sponsored someone in the group, thank you very much for your support. If not there is still time to do so and you can contact any member directly or through myself on 087-2455800 or through any member of the Fixtures Committee.

I would like to pay a particular mention to John Fagan who will also be joining the group for the challenge. John is fund raising on behalf of Research Motor Neurone and if you would like to support him you can donate on line on the following link

http://www.mycharity.ie/event/john_fagans_event/

PS - There are 2 places remaining if anyone would like to take part in the challenge ! Great opportunity to achieve a personal ambition.

Apologies ....  there is an amendment to our last bit of news.....  the game v Whitehall should be all about a Hurling

game and not that silly game of football.    Sure anyone can play 'football'....  what do you think.... is 'Hurling' the

best game in the world or not.  Isn't football only for those who have difficulty seeing ....... and when you get to our

age, sometime we can't tell the difference what game they are playing....

Frank and Greg

p.s. we are on our  way now to see the Championship game v St. Marks.  Terrible really when we have to pay in to see some our lads playing, however there is a rumour  going around that they are letting the first 50 people in FREE if they produce their 'old age licence'.   What's da?

He goes again,

  • Tuesday 30th April.

Senior Camogie League v St. Vincents in Finglas at 6.45pm

Junior Camogie League v Raheny in St. Ann’s at 6.45pm

Junior Hurling Championship v St. Maurs in Finglas at 7.15pm

  • Wednesday 1st May.

Senior Hurling Championship v Kilmacud Crokes in Silver Park at 7.15pm

  • Thursday 9th May.

Senior Football Championship v St. Marks in Chanel College at 7pm.

Saturday 11 May.

Intermediate Football Championship v St. Sylvesters in Cloghran at 6pm.

The Pitch will be closed (if the weather permits) for essential maintenance from 1st – 10th May.  We need a week of more or less ideal weather. This is a task that we have been continuing for the past and has proved it’s worth.  We would ask, please, for your total co-operation in trying to keep even walking off the pitch and arrange training schedules well away from the treated areas.  Much will depend on the weather and we will try to keep you up-to-date with all developments. The signs will go up when the task begins.  Again, please bear with us. Even if you see children ‘playing’ on the area after pitch treatment – they are doing harm to the treatment and may suffer from the effects of the fertilizer if they happen to fall and get any type of ‘cut’.

Love from Frank and Greg.

The saga which begun last August is almost finished - within 24 hours - INI 754 will become ZV10253.  Just to let you know that INI 754 was born on 1st February, 1965 andd was adopted by Erins Isle ten years later at a cost of 1000 punts - which was a lot of money in those days considering that houses were going for that plus a few more punts then.

She became well known in the area since - when she arrived, she had a full set of 'hair' (known as cabs now a days - and was very nearly joining the present day C.A.B.S./N.A.M.A.).   However after many 'games/hurdles (nearly said 'hurleys') the job is nearly done.  How many pitches has she (INI 754/ZV10253) manacured in those fifty odd years.

Thank you all for your patience and co-operation and the main thing then is to find a  sponsor for the new reg plates.  Any ideas/offers will be gratefully recdeived.

Frank and Greg
